We participated in the first ever Ice Dragon Boat Festival in North America in 2017, and we are returning again this year as we had a lot of fun last year. Last year there were 60 teams and it was sold out - this year there are 100 teams and it is sold out again - but WE got in. The event also takes place during Ottawa's Winterlude (Feb 3 to 20).
Each team consists of 10 "paddlers", a steersperson, and a drummer. The boats are rigged with skis and we will use special ice stick "paddles". Practices will be held Friday so we can get used to the boats. Each team gets 3 races and competes in divisions like a regular festival. Check out this video from Hungary. Check out this news article from last year hinting about this event coming. Click the red button below to register.
Cost: $90 per person (team registration fee of $847.50 / 10 paddlers plus $5).
Latest News (Jan. 30): We are almost ready for the event, with transportation for everyone finalized, and accommodations in Ottawa now also set (AirBnB whole house walking distance to Dow's Lake). Our practice is scheduled for 2:40 to 3:00 PM on Friday on Dow's Lake.
See the Rick Mercer video to the right - at the 3:42 mark, you see one boat swerve towards Rick and then crash into the back of our boat (that is me steering with the Motley Crew jersey on). We had a blast and were interviewed by Rick but it didn't make it past the cutting room.
2018 "RUSTY DRAGONS" Team
Mixed team of 10, with an even 5 women and 5 men on the boat.
Steer & Drummer: (Tim will find friends at festival, so he can "paddle").
